Balloons carrying a large quantity of cigarettes have disrupted flights in Lithuania, as Lithuania's primary air hub was compelled to shut down for several hours when numerous of them drifted across the national airspace.
Aviation Problems
The airport closure led to the cancellation of 30 flights affecting 6,000 passengers, with authorities cautioning that further disruptions were possible throughout Monday.
National Security Measures
Border security stated that 25 meteorological balloons were detected entering Lithuania from neighboring Belarus, with two balloons ending up right above the airport's airspace.
As many as 14 of the meteorological devices deployed throughout the weekend drifted across the metropolitan zone, which is the location of Lithuania's main urban center and close to the border with Belarus.
Illegal Goods Seizure
No fewer than 11 balloons transporting eighteen thousand packages of illegal tobacco products have been collected so far, though additional discoveries are expected, according to customs agents.
Cross-Border Contraband Trend
While creating issues, representatives clarified that "Meteorological equipment transporting smuggled items - tobacco products originating in Belarus - are nothing new in neighboring countries."
To date in the current year, numerous meteorological balloons have been observed infiltrating Lithuania from Belarus, while 966 were documented the previous year.
Cross-Border Effects
Simultaneously, the north-eastern Podlaskie region, which similarly neighbors Belarus, has recorded more than one hundred incidents in which illegal goods were transported from its neighbor using the balloons.
Illegal Transport Methods
In response to questions about why criminals use a method that is highly susceptible to weather elements rather than simpler to operate drones, authorities explained that "Atmospheric equipment are basic instruments used by smugglers - they are cheaper than drones for moving tobacco products from Belarus."
Border Protection Aims
Officials added that "Our services' aim is to seize the largest possible quantities of contraband and to apprehend coordinators and perpetrators so that these practices become unprofitable and present no risk to passenger aircraft."
European Tensions
The recent incidents occur during a period of growing anxiety in Europe following numerous drone incursions that have created aviation problems across the continent.
Parallel situations in nearby states have caused EU officials to fast-track conversations about improving airspace protection throughout the region.
