Around fifty cars have been smeared with what seems to be blood from a person in the Germany's town of Hanau in proximity to Frankfurt, as reported by police.
Automobiles, walls and mailboxes were vandalized, sometimes with swastikas, they reported in a release.
Police say they were notified in the late hours on Wednesday, when a individual observed that a car in the Lamboy district of Hanau had been covered with a red-colored liquid.
The liquid had been drawn in the pattern of a banned symbol, they stated.
Officers then found many other smeared automobiles and residential walls in the adjacent neighborhood.
These symbols are illegal in Germany under laws banning the public display of symbols from the Nazi era.
Officials state preliminary tests indicate the liquid was most likely blood from a person.
"There is still no clue as to its source; authorities are not yet informed of any harm in association with the occurrence," they added.
City officials announced they were working "to solve the case" and have asked to the community for information.
A senior official commented the incident made him without words and needed to be addressed promptly.
"This event affects the center of Hanau and revives the trauma of the right-wing terrorist attack half a decade ago," he wrote on a platform, recalling the death of nine victims by a shooter targeting individuals of immigrant origin in five years prior.
