EU Might Respond to ‘Unwarranted’ US Travel Restrictions, Official States

The European Union might “act quickly and firmly” against what it deems “unwarranted” travel bans imposed by the United States against five Europeans working on combating online hate and disinformation, an EU official stated.

EU Officials Condemn US Move as ‘Coercion’

European leaders including Emmanuel Macron charged the US administration of “bullying and threats”, after the travel bans were placed on figures that were at the heart of campaigns to introduce legislation regulating US-based technology firms.

“For far too long, ideologues in Europe have led coordinated campaigns to coerce American platforms to suppress American viewpoints they disagree with,” wrote a senior US official online. “The current administration will not stand for these egregious acts of extraterritorial censorship.”

Widespread Condemnation Across Europe

Germany, Spain, the UK and a chorus of EU officials supported the French president in condemning the decision.

The restrictions were imposed this week on an ex-European commissioner who helped draft the bloc’s digital governance law, as well as several activists fighting false information, from two in Germany and two in the UK.

A Deepening Dispute Over Regulation

The DSA is viewed by US officials as a type of speech restriction, whereas EU authorities argue the rules are essential to control hate speech and falsehoods.

This disagreement threatens to become part of a much broader existing political and ideological clash between Washington and European institutions.

Additional Updates Reported Today

In other legal developments:

  • A federal judge has halted attempts to cut federal homeland security funding to states which resist certain immigration enforcement policies. The official stated the action was “a further instance” of tying federal aid to adherence to directives.
  • Approval was given for the deployment of 350 national guard members to New Orleans ahead of the new year, coinciding with an active border security initiative.
  • A Pacific Island nation will consent to accept dozens of individuals from the US in exchange for increased assistance, following concluding a memorandum of understanding with Washington.

Furthermore, a Democratic lawmaker has initiated legal action to demand the stripping of a political figure’s name from a prominent cultural institution in Washington DC.

Experts have also noted that recent statements regarding Venezuelan oil align with a wider ideology in certain circles of “resource imperialism”, leading to parallels with historical international strategies.
