The star has given the entirety of his £25,000 award cash to the Music Venues Trust, which functions to preserve the United Kingdom's small concert spaces.

He was awarded the prize on October 16 as his third album People Watching was named the best record of the last 12 months.

He has opted to hand the money over to the MVT, in recognition of the vital role small stages had in his initial steps.

"As an artist couldn't be pursuing what I am doing today if it weren't for all the shows I did around the North East, and elsewhere, when I was beginning," stated Fender. "These spaces are iconic, but they are struggling."

Since the start of 2023, more than 150 of these spaces have ceased operations – about 16 percent of the total UK scene.

Recently, major artists such as the band Pulp, Coldplay, Katy Perry and Ed Sheeran have all supported the trust in its initiatives to keep the scene afloat, by applying a minor surcharge to their ticket prices, which goes to help independent venues.

Sam Fender also joined in, raising more than £100,000 on his live tour to support numerous grassroots venues across the UK.

These funds assisted spaces that were dealing with imminent closure due to challenges caused by floods, fire incidents and family tragedies, as well as regulatory hurdles, legal disputes and sound issues.

Additional spaces obtained funding support in upgrading facilities and gear that positively impacted artists and fans.

"The idea that revenue from shows in big venues helps the smaller venues, where it all starts for performers like me, is just common sense," the star has commented.

The musician is among several artists to donate his award prize money to good deeds.

In they received the award in the mid-90s for their release the album, frontman Jarvis Cocker stated that the group would contribute their prize money to the non-profit War Child.

During 2002, rapper and singer the artist split her award across multiple good causes, including the children's charity and a charity for Sickle Cell.

"And I gave a £1,000 to the center, to their gymnastics program, because I did gymnastics when I was growing up and they lacked updated gear," she explained to the media.

In recent years, Ezra Collective donated their prize money to the community center that developed their band, in addition to other independent music bodies.

Additionally the 1994 recipients M People contributed their winnings to a charity for MS after a close contact was diagnosed the illness.

"Receiving the award was sufficient," remarked artist the singer. "The money was the extra but we didn't require the cherry, because we had the honor. So our winning affected somebody else's life."

Last week, the MVT revealed it had protected two grassroots venues in that region, by placing them under local control.

One venue in Southampton and the second in the city were purchased under the public acquisition initiative, which is backed by a national body and music fans who acquire "ownership units" in the venues.
